NATUROPATHY

What is Naturopathy?

The dictionary defines naturopathy as:

“ drug-free medical treatment: a system of medicine founded on the belief that diet, mental state, exercise, breathing, and other natural factors are central to the origin and treatment of disease. Also called natural medicine “ [Ref 4]

Your body has a powerful natural ability to heal itself. Naturopathy recognizes this and holds this fact in the utmost respect.

The role of Naturopathy may, therefore, best and most simply be expressed as:

Stimulating, supporting and enhancing your body’s natural systems to overcome sickness and disease.

Naturopathy is concerned with promoting the wellbeing of your whole self - your body and also your mind.

How you think outworks in what you say and what you do. Your mind is from where your immune and recovery systems are directed to manage your healing and maintain your health.

Naturopathy seeks the most effective, gentle and least invasive approaches.

Naturopathy achieves this through the use of natural substances, treatments and remedies, such as herbs and nutrition and by dispensing natural health wisdom.

Although 'natural' does not indiscriminately equal 'totally safe' [Ref 11] , the organic nature of botanicals is used by Naturopathy because:

  • being natural, they are compatible with your body’s chemistry
  • they can have wide ranging benefits to build up your health beyond dealing with your particular problem.
  • rarely are there unwelcome side effects.

There are exceptions but in general you should expect that the natural treatments employed in Naturopathy tend not to produce ‘an instant fix’. Naturopathy usually produces a sustained and more gradual route to recovery.

You have heard many times before that truism which is too little heeded:

“Prevention is better than cure”.

“Prevention is better than cure” is another key principle of Naturopathy.

We all know how much more we enjoy life when we are well.

There are many threats to our health from our modern environment and lifestyles. Naturopathy urges you to

Take responsibility for your own wellbeing.

When you are well, keep well. Look after yourself. Gently exercise body and brain.

And make good the shortfalls your lifestyle may force on you.
